Stolen Steam Accounts Empty
PostSubject: Stolen Steam Accounts   Stolen Steam Accounts EmptyMon Aug 24, 2009 9:25 am

Alright guys, I've noticed lately that a lot of people are having their
accounts stolen and it's getting to be a major problem amongst our
community. In order to stop this growing aggrivation, I've decided to
post a few tipful ideas on what to look out for and what to do when
someone is trying to steal your account.

These are some tips you should take into consideration to help protect yourself from theft.

1.
Upon recieving a friend request or group request on Friends, you should
insure that you actually know the person adding you. Adding someone you
don't know or have never played with in-game is the first steps in the
hacking cycle.

2. When recieving a link from someone, no matter who it is, be cautious before clicking.
Read the URL CAREFULLY
to ensure it is a valid website and not a phish site. One way to find a
phishing site is say the URL says
"http://www.steampowered.com/eme12loli1337" or something
along those lines. In otherwords, if it doesn't sound like a legitimate
site, don't click it.

3. If you do click the link, and it ever, EVER, re-directs you to a Steam Login page,
it's a phish site. DO NOT re-enter your account information
to "Login" as it states you have to. This is how the hacker obtains
your account information. Your submited information is saved to a file
on their computer and they then check it and use it to log in.

4. If by some random chance you do click on a link and enter your information
at a phish site, go back to your settings and change your password as soon as possible!
This may include changing your e-mail as well if your e-mail password
is the same as your Steam log-in password. For example, I have two
e-mails that I use just incase I need to use the back up account for
emergencies.

5. Remember everyone, I don't care how many times
these two things are stated, I'm going to state them again. Remember,
no Steam Administrator will ever ask you for your account information,
so don't give it to them! Also, don't fall for the "Dude, let me borrow
your account so I can play so-and-so game, I swear I'll return it"
trick.

6. TRUST NO ONE ON FRIENDS. I mean exactly what I just said. I don't care
if its your best friend in real life's account that you get a linked message from,
it might not be them.
It's common for a hacker to steal one account and then phish directly
from that account. There are two main reasons as to why they do this:
Firstly it adds more accounts to phish on their list and secondly
people don't think twice before clicking the link because its their
friend's account. Check every link you recieve from everyone, no matter
who it is.

7. This next tip pertains to multiple logins for different applications and such.
Use different passwords for your e-mail, Steam login, etc.
This will help enable the hacker from changing your actual password
quickely. For example, don't use "ilikegoats" as your Steam Login and
then as the password for the e-mail you've provide in your Steam
settings. Hackers commonly go to your e-mail provider and then enter
your Steam password with your e-mail login to see what else they can
find out on you. That leads into even deeper controversy sometimes but
I'm not getting into that. Anywho, moral of the story, don't use the
same password for everything you use, it can get you into trouble
faster.

These are a few ways to keep your account safe from
hackers. If you follow these guidelines, you should not encounter any
problems within the near future, hopefully. Just be cautious upon
adding new friends and recieving links to websites. I hope this helps
people in the future.
